RAWALPINDI: Defence Minister Ahmed Mukhtar suggested to visiting UN Special Envoy for Assistance to Pakistan on Friday that industrial zones should be set up in tribal areas with the help of international community for socio-economic development of people affected by terrorism.

During a meeting with Jean Maurice Ripert, the minister said the international community should realise Pakistan's difficulties because the war on terror inflicted losses of billions of dollars on its economy and devastated educational and health infrastructure in violence-hit areas.

Jean Maurice Ripert met the defence minister here. Rear Admiral Shah Sohail Masood and other senior officials of the defence ministry attended the meeting.

He said that industrial zones should be established in tribal areas with the help of international community to provide employment opportunities to people of the area.

He informed the UN envoy that Pakistan's economy could be improved if western countries provided trade concessions and entered into a free trade agreement on the Turkish model.

Mr Ripert said that the UN was actively mobilising international community to help Pakistan resolve its social and economic difficulties. He said the UN was aware of Pakistan's difficulties and was approaching donor countries to extend financial and social assistance for reconstruction of terror-ravaged areas of Malakand division and Federally-Administered Tribal Areas and rehabilitation of IDPs.
