Five killed as clashes continue in Kurram Agency

PARACHINAR: Five persons were killed and 12 others sustained injuries in fresh clashes between the Turi and Mangal tribesmen in Shalozan and Tangi areas of Kurram Agency on Monday, tribal sources said.

The sources said that the rival tribes were using heavy weapons against each other. They confirmed the killing of five persons and injuries to 12 others in the fresh clashes but would not tell to which tribe the victims belonged.

Turi and Mangal tribes have been fighting for the last seven days because of a water dispute and ownership of forests. Elders of a local jirga and political authorities are making efforts to broker ceasefire between the warring tribes but have not yet succeeded in their endeavors.

RAWALPINDI: Defence Minister Ahmed Mukhtar suggested to visiting UN Special Envoy for Assistance to Pakistan on Friday that industrial zones should be set up in tribal areas with the help of international community for socio-economic development of people affected by terrorism.

During a meeting with Jean Maurice Ripert, the minister said the international community should realise Pakistan's difficulties because the war on terror inflicted losses of billions of dollars on its economy and devastated educational and health infrastructure in violence-hit areas.

Jean Maurice Ripert met the defence minister here. Rear Admiral Shah Sohail Masood and other senior officials of the defence ministry attended the meeting.

He said that industrial zones should be established in tribal areas with the help of international community to provide employment opportunities to people of the area.

He informed the UN envoy that Pakistan's economy could be improved if western countries provided trade concessions and entered into a free trade agreement on the Turkish model.

Mr Ripert said that the UN was actively mobilising international community to help Pakistan resolve its social and economic difficulties. He said the UN was aware of Pakistan's difficulties and was approaching donor countries to extend financial and social assistance for reconstruction of terror-ravaged areas of Malakand division and Federally-Administered Tribal Areas and rehabilitation of IDPs.

The plane took off from Peshawar and landed in Parachinar, Kurram Agency's administrative headquarters.

An official of the Civil Aviation Authority said that the accident took place because 'nose-wheel' of the plane was damaged during landing.

The airport in charge said that the runway had been cleared for traffic.

The flying club has been operating a service between Peshawar and Parachinar for the past one year because of attacks on passengers along the main road.

The situation, however, became tense between the two rival parties after unidentified armed men kidnapped 60 persons, which later led to fierce clashes.
