Hangu massacre first shock for new KP governor

ISLAMABAD: The massacre of 11 unarmed civilians on board a Parachinar-bound van by militants in Hangu district on Sunday is the first major tragic incident after Barrister Masood Kausar took charge as the KP governor early last month.

Parachinar is the headquarters of Kurram Agency, where over 0.5 million people are under siege for the last almost four years at the hands of militants dubbed by media as the Taliban. The only major link between the rest of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and the agency is Tall Road, which is under the control of armed elements and even the FC has not been able to provide foolproof security to convoys.

Legislators from the agency had high hopes there would be significant improvement in the situation, being referred to as a major humanitarian crisis, after Barrister Masood became the governor of the province, the worst affected by terrorist acts in recent years. "I have met the governor and apprised him of the scenario, particularly the seething humanitarian issues in the wake of long-continuing shortage of lifesaving drugs, essential day-to-day items such as flour, sugar and spices since long. More alarmingly, routine life is totally crippled...even it is not safe for schoolchildren to go out," remarked Sajid Hussain Turi, while talking to The News here, following his return from Peshawar, where he called on the governor a day after the tragic incident in Hangu.
