SW operation in progress: 8 extremists dead

Updated at: 1059 PST, Sunday, November 08, 2009 WANA: At least eight extremists have been killed and 11 others injured in the fresh crackdown of the security forces in various area of South Waziristan Agency, Geo News reported Sunday. The extremists are fleeing from the areas after the security forces entered the stronghold of extremists. The extremists are believed to be arriving in Orakzai Agency, Kurram Agency and North Waziristan. To stem the inflow of extremist in the area, curfew has been clamped in North Waziristan Agency (NWA) area of Razmak. According to sources, the security forces continued the search operation in South Waziristan Agency areas of Makin and Ladha, where eight extremists were killed and 11 others including a commander were injured in the fresh action. The forces are pounding the hideouts of extremists with fighter jets, gunship helicopters and heavy artillery. Meantime, search operation has been started in Kurram Agency area of Lower Kurram, where an extremist was killed and three others were injured; while, several others have been arrested. Pak-Afghan border is still closed today on the third consecutive day.

Sunday, November 08, 2009 By our correspondent ISLAMABAD: The Awami National Party (ANP) legislators during their meeting with President Asif Ali Zardari on Friday sought his intervention to defuse the long-standing humanitarian crisis in Kurram Agency. Senator Abdul Nabi Bangash drew the president’s attention towards the tense situation in the agency, particularly gripping Parachinar and some of its adjoining areas for almost two years. The lawmaker explained how serious the situation had become, as stocks of food and medicines had almost exhausted. “Even life-saving drugs are not available there,” he said. “Senator Bangash raised the issue during the meeting at the President House and expressed concern over the continuous blockade of the main road leading towards the Kurram Agency,” said ANP Senior Vice-President Senator Haji Muhammad Adeel, when The News contacted him. ANP President Senator Asfandyar Wali called for more measures to improve law and order and security situation, particularly in Darra Adamkhel and some other areas, infested with militants. According to sources, security forces killed an extremist and wounded three others in Chapri area of Kurram Agency, while security forces arrested 10 suspects in Lower Kurram. Meanwhile, police arrested three terrorists in a raid on a shop in Taza Gram area of Lower Deer.

9 militants killed as operation Rah-e-Nijat completes three weeks

Friday, November 06, 2009  WANA: Nine more militants were killed and eight injured as operation Rah-e-Nijat underway in South Waziristan has completed three weeks. Security forces speed up the action after entering in militants' stronghold Ladha. At least 400 militants were killed and more then 100 hideouts destroyed during three weeks of operation that begun on October 16. According to sources, security forces operation continued in Makeen, Ladha, Sararogha and adjoining areas. Fighter jets, gunship helicopters and heavy artillery pounding militants positions. Nine militants were killed and eight wounded in the action. Militants are fleeing to North Waziristan, Kurram Agency and Orakzai Agency because of operation.

5 militants killed in Kurram Agency clash

Updated at: 1047 PST,  Wednesday, November 04, 2009  PARACHINAR: Five militants have been killed in a militants attack on security forces check post and retaliatory action in adjoining area of Kurram Agency. Sources said militants attacked check post with heavy and automatic weapons in Spantal area. However, no loss of life was reported. Security forces in reply shelled militants' hideouts in Spantal and Chinaniga area in Lower Kurram. Five militants were killed and several others wounded in the action. Two hideouts were also destroyed. Tal-Kurram Agency Road and Tal Road in North Waziristan have been closed after the incident.

HANGU: At least four suspected militants were killed as security forces retaliated an attack at the SpinThall check post in the Hangu district near the border of Kurram Agency.

Meanwhile, in Kohat, police say two alleged suicide bombers accidentally blew themselves up while on their way to the PAF Range road, 25 kilometres from Kohat city.

According to police, the suicide bombers were riding a motorcycle and apparently slipped on the bumpy road and a bomber's jacket exploded accidentally.

The bomb disposal squad confirmed that traces of explosive material had been found on the damaged motorcycle along with body parts of the alleged suicide bomber. The men were carrying 50-60 kilograms of explosives on the motorcycle but it could not be ascertained as to what was their exact target.

Police teams recovered the arms, legs and head of one of the bombers.

Meanwhile, a woman was killed and three others injured when a rocket fell at a house in the Thall area. — DawnNews

Monday, November 02, 2009 Bureau report PESHAWAR: The 'Pakhtun elders' who met US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in Islamabad during her visit didn't include anyone from conflict-hit South or North Waziristan and even Swat though it was reported that they came from these places. In fact, a bearded man wearing a big turban like those worn by the Mahsud and Wazir tribesmen wasn't a tribal elder and parliamentarian. He was seen in pictures in the company of Ms Clinton and newspapers reported he was a tribal elder. He turned out to be Faisal Awan, belonging to Dera Ismail Khan and executive director of a non-governmental organization called FIDA. This NGO has been given the task to register the people displaced from South Waziristan and arriving in Dera Ismail Khan and Tank following the military operation there. A number of Mahsud tribesmen wondered as to who was this man wearing a turban that is usually worn by the Mahsuds. He looked unfamiliar and this made them to ask journalists and others about his identity. The US embassy and its consulate in Peshawar had drawn up the list of invitees to this meeting of 'Pakhtun elders' with the Secretary of State. There was only one tribal parliamentarian in the group that twice met Ms Clinton, for an hour first and then for another half an hour later. He was Munir Orakzai, the MNA from Kurram Agency and also leader of the tribal parliamentary group in the parliament. Another invitee from FATA was Dr Begum Jan, who runs an NGO. The other women in the list of 'Pakhtun elders' invited to meet Ms Clinton were NWFP social welfare minister Sitara Ayaz, who belongs to the ANP, a PPP lawmaker Shazia Tehmas, another NGO head Maryam Bibi who is founder of the Khwendo Kor organization, and Frontier Women University vice-chancellor Farhana Jehangir. The politicians in the group were ANP NWFP president Senator Afrasiyab Khattak, PML-N provincial head and former chief minister Pir Sabir Shah and JUI-F lawmaker Mufti Kifayatullah. Nauman Wazir, a Frontier industrial, and Dr Farooq, a former Jamaat-i-Islami member and writer and religious scholar, were also part of the group that exchanged views with Ms Clinton.It was learnt that Pir Sabir didn't say much in the meeting and failed to attend the second part of the session. Munir Orakzai opposed US drone attacks and Mufti Kifayatullah argued that presence of American and Nato forces in Afghanistan and the region was the real cause of unrest. Afrasiyab Khattak echoes the ANP policies, which support the US and Nato military presence in Afghanistan and support tough army action against the militants in Pakistan's tribal areas. Dr Farooq stressed that the US must send the 40,000 extra troops demanded by its military commander to Afghanistan to stabilize the country and tackle the militants. Other participants mostly restricted themselves to their own fields such education, social welfare work, development activities and outside support for the NGOs.

PESHAWAR: Elders of the Zaimusht tribe in Kurram Agency have rejected reports that they have agreed to extend cooperation to the administration without acceptance of their demands. Malik Khalilur Rahman, an elder of the tribe, told The News from Sadda in Kurram Agency that he and other tribal elders had met the assistant political agent and discussed the issues but the Zaimusht tribe had not yet taken any decision to cooperate with the government. "We told the government officials that we would consult our tribe and then make a decision," he said. Elders from the Zaimusht tribe wondered why television channels were reporting on Sunday that they had made the decision to extend cooperation to the government. They said the tribe had genuine grievances and those must be addressed before cooperation could be extended to the administration. The Zaimusht tribe lives in Sadda and in roadside villages all the way up to Chapri, the place where the limits of Hangu district end and Kurram Agency begins. The government is keen to have the road from Hangu to Parachinar passing through reopened with the cooperation of the Sunni tribes living in the area. The road was closed more than two years ago and the Shia population living in Upper Kurram has to travel through Afghanistan to reach Parachinar and other villages in the area. Deployment of troops is also an option if talks failed to reopen the road.

	PESHAWAR: The operation by security forces have killed 15 militants in Orakzai and Kurram agencies, while 7 security men embraced martyrdom and 15 others were wounded by insurgents' bomb attack in Khyber Agency. The security forces barraged central Kurram area with jet planes, killing 7 insurgents and injuring 11 in Kurram Agency, whereas 4 militant hideouts have been ruined in Khwaidad Khel and its adjacent areas. Air strikes by security forces have killed 8 terrorists and destroyed 3 militant dens in Dabori, Maidan, Mamozai areas of Orakzai Agency. An official statement said that 7 security men have been martyred and 15 hurt in insurgent's attack by a remote control bomb when the troops were commuting from Surghar, Tehsil Bara, Khyber agency. Surghar area has been sealed after the explosion which destroyed a vehicle of security forces.

ISLAMABAD: A 5.0 magnitude shallow earthquake jolted northern Pakistani cities Friday, but there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage, officials said.

The tremors were felt in several northwestern Pakistani cities, including Peshawar, and the capital Islamabad, at 12:46 pm, chief of Pakistan's meteorological department, Qamar-uz-Zaman Chaudhry, told AFP.

The quake's epicentre was located near the northwestern town of Parachinar, some 160 kilometres west of Islamabad at a depth of 10 kilometres, he said.

A tribal administration official in Parachinar said residents rushed out of their homes but there were no immediate reports of any damage or casualties.

The US Geological Survey registered the quake at 5.1, and said it was centred 87 kilometres southeast of the Afghan capital Kabul.

It was the second earthquake to jolt Pakistan in less than 24 hours. Late Thursday a 6.1 magnitude earthquake was felt in several Pakistani cities, but caused no casualties.

Northern Afghanistan and Pakistan are frequently hit by earthquakes, especially around the Hindu Kush range near the collision of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates.

A 7.6-magnitude earthquake in northwest Pakistan and Kashmir in October 2005 killed 74,000 people and displaced 3.5 million.
