Pakistan 'nabs' dozens over Shia killings

Pakistan 'nabs' dozens over Shia killings
Tue, 09 Jun 2009 14:50:22 GMT
Pakistani troops patrol on the streets in Dera Ismail Khan.
Pakistani security forces have reportedly detained dozens of extremists involved in the slaughter of Shia Muslims in the country's lawless northwest.

Wahhabi-minded insurgents on Sunday shot dead at least three Shia Muslims and wounded nine others in northwestern town of Dera Ismail Khan, some 270 km (170 miles) southwest of Islamabad.

On Monday, the security personnel is also said to have arrested around 60 militants across the town following the deadly attack.

Countless incidents of massacres happened in Dera Ismail Khan and Kurram Agency over some past months.

In mid February, some 35 Shias were killed and 65 others were injured after a bomb ripped through a Shia Muslim leader's funeral procession on in the northwestern town of Dera Ismail Khan.

A string of sectarian attacks on Shia Muslims in recent months has undermined already deteriorating security in the nuclear-armed country.

This is while the Taliban-linked Wahhabi groups in Parachinar, Hangu district and much of the Kurram tribal agency have been killing dozens of Shia Muslims on a daily basis over the past few months.

Some local sources say more than 2,000 Shia community members have been killed in the region since 2007.

The Pakistani media has warned against religious violence which has defamed the conflict-torn country.

"Taliban have gone about slaughtering their fellow-Muslims, especially in targeting the Shias of Kurram and Dera Ismail Khan. Also, it has to be said - and rather unfortunately - that this kind of Talibanization has been happening in the rest of the country..., albeit in a slightly different manner," The News said in a report in early May.

Shias say they make up one-third of Pakistan's 160 million-strong population. Since the 1980s, thousands of people have been killed in violence-related incidents in Pakistan by extremist groups.

JAP holds protest demo against Shia killings

Staff Report

KARACHI: The Jaffaria Alliance Pakistan (JAP) staged a demonstration on Sunday to protest against the killings of Shia Muslims by the Taliban in Dera Ismail Khan.

"We demand the government to protect the life and property of people of Dera Ismail Khan and Kurram Agency," urged former Senator and JAP president Allama Abbas Kumaili while addressing a rally outside the Karachi Press Club. A large number of religious scholars and clerics participated in the protest against the killings of Shi'ites in DI Khan.

They expressed dissatisfaction with the government's performance, adding that it has failed to save innocent people from the terrorism of Taliban. "We demand the PPP-led government to part ways with a religious party that is a part of the ruling coalition because the party leadership is involved in the killings of Shia Muslims in DI Khan and Kurram Agency," Kumaili stressed.

Labeling the Taliban involved in the bloodshed of the Shia community as US and Indian agents, he said that the Taliban want to destabilize the country by using sectarian violence. Kumaili said that it's the responsibility of the government to protect its nationals from terrorists. He demanded of the president, PM and the COAS to immediately extend the ongoing anti-terrorists operation to DI Khan where more than 126 Shi'ite Muslims have been assassinated from March 2008 to date, adding that the operation should further be extended to Kurram Agency. "We support the initiative of Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani against the Taliban terrorists," he said while appealing to all Pakistanis to support the anti-terrorist operation without any discrimination of color and caste. He warned that JAP would start a countrywide campaign against the government if the army operation is not extended to DI Khan and Kurram Agency.

Warring Kurram tribes to sign peace accord soon

Daily Times

Warring Kurram tribes to sign peace accord soon

PESHAWAR: Three warring tribes in Kurram Agency may soon sign an accord under the aegis of the Afghan government and NATO to provide safe passage to two Sunni tribes to Afghanistan.

"We hope this agreement among the Bangash, Mengal and Toori tribes will be signed in the next week, helping the Bangash and Mengal tribesmen to use Kharlachi route through the Toori territory to travel to Afghanistan," Attaullah Khan, general secretary of a reforms committee, told Daily Times on Wednesday. The Bangash and Mengal tribes' access to Afghanistan was cut off when the Toori tribe stopped rival tribes from using their territory to travel to Afghanistan. Leaders from both tribes met fellow tribesmen in Afghanistan to "pressure" the rival Tooris across the border to allow them safe passage. "I think the Kabul government and NATO officials are taking interest in our case because they do not want sectarian violence to spill over into Afghanistan," Attaullah said.
