25 trucks carrying edibles reach Parachinar

PARACHINAR: A convoy of security forces’ vehicles carrying edibles Sunday arrived here as the Parachinar-Sadda-Thall Road reopened after a closure for three years. Official sources said 25 trucks of the security forces carrying food, medicines and other necessary items reached Parachinar, the headquarters of Kurram Agency. The arrival of the convoy with food items sent a wave of happiness among the residents as they had been facing severe shortage of edibles and medicines due to blockade of roads by militants. Kurram Militia Commander Col Tausif Akhtar led the convoy named as ‘Peace Convoy,’ which was accorded a warm welcome by the residents at Balishkhel checkpost. The residents hoped the government would continue supply of foodstuffs and other goods to the agency and take steps for reopening of roads.

Sunday, November 15, 2009 KALAYA/PARACHINAR: Nineteen militants were killed when fighter jets targeted hideouts of the militants in Orakzai and Kurram tribal agencies on Saturday, official sources said. Also, a soldier sustained injuries when militants attacked a roadside checkpoint in the Tora Waray area in the Orakzai Agency. Sources said the fighter jets hit five hideouts of the militants in the Bezotkhel area in the Orakzai Agency, killing nine terrorists. Three militants were killed in attacks in Khadezai, Ghiljo and Mazidgarhi, the sources said, adding 11 Taliban hideouts and three vehicles were also destroyed in the action. Security forces have intensified aerial attacks on the hideouts of the militants in recent days. Meanwhile, seven militants were killed and five others sustained injuries in the bombing by fighter jets in central Kurram. There was, however, no independent confirmation of the casualties suffered by the militants. Sources said the fighter planes blitzed two hideouts of the militants in the Dogar area. “The jets pounded the hideouts after reports about the presence of the militants in the area,” an official said. He said seven militants were killed in the attack. Earlier, the militants attacked a security check-post in the Tora Waray area of the Orakzai Agency, injuring one soldier, identified as Hawaldar Amir Khan. After the incident, the positions of militants in the area were targeted with heavy artillery from Doaba. Our Batkhela correspondent adds: Five militants were killed in a gun battle with security forces in the Chinar area near Totakan Talangai on Saturday. Sources said the exchange of fire took place early in the morning and continued for a long time. Security forces shifted the bodies to the Agency Headquarters Hospital in Batkhela where the slain militants could not be identified. Later, the bodies were buried in a Galai graveyard. APP adds from Islamabad: Seven militants were killed and four soldiers sustained injuries during the last 24 hours of operation Rah-e-Nijat in South Waziristan Agency, the military said. According to a media update of the Army-run Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), on the Jandola-Srarogha axis, security forces cleared the area around Madike, located two kilometres northeast of Ahmed Wam and also secured important height Point 1663 at Parmonkai Raghzai. Three soldiers got injured during an encounter with terrorists in the Ahmed Wam area, it added. On the Shakai-Kaniguram axis, the ISPR said, security forces were consolidating their positions and conducting search operations. The important feature of Takrai Sar, located one kilometre south of Marobi Raghzai and three kilometres northeast of Ladha, has been secured. Four terrorists were killed during clashes in the area, it added. During a search of terrorist commander Dr Nasrullah’s house in the Khaisura area, a large number of propaganda CDs, maps, passports and miscellaneous photos have been recovered. The troops also completely sanitised Banglekhel, Sultano, Narakai and Tutai Langarkhel areas and recovered arms and ammunition from there. On the Razmak-Makeen axis, security forces are securing areas south and east of Makeen and have established contact with forces moving on the Ladha-Kaniguram axis. According to the ISPR, an important road from Makeen to Lattaka Narai, east of Makeen, has been secured. Three terrorists were killed and a soldier sustained injuries during clashes in these areas. In Ghariom-Mir Khoni sector, the troops are consolidating their positions and advancing further and six improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were defused during the clearance operation, it added.

PARACHINAR: Twelve security forces personnel were injured when a Frontier Corps (FC) vehicles, escorting a convoy of people, overturned in the Arawali area of the lower part of Kurram Agency on Thursday. It was the first time in almost three years that the people from Upper Kurram reached Peshawar, as militants had established their own checkpoints in several places on the way from Sadda to Chapri. Members of Turi and other tribes had to travel through Afghanistan and then re-enter Pakistan from the Torkham border to reach Peshawar. The convoy of 29 vehicles, heavily guarded by FC men ,passed through the roads across Kurram Agency, previously occupied by militant groups. The tribesmen thanked the political administration and FC officials for providing security to them besides clearing the roads of militants across the agency. The sources said security forces had imposed a curfew in Sadda bazaar and surrounding areas for the last 10 days.

Jets wipe out nine militants in Kurram

PESHAWAR – Nine terrorists were killed and many others got injured in the ongoing military operation in Kurram Agency where PAF jets targeted militants’ hideouts on Monday.
According to reports, most of the militants fled to adjacent Kurram Agency due to ongoing offensive Rah-e-Nijat in South Waziristan Agency (SWA). The PAF jets, on intelligence information, destroyed the suspected hideouts of the militants in Oarlagai, Khaparak and Speer Koat areas of Central Kurram.
For the last three years, the militants have blocked main roads from Gulpar and Khapar to Peshawar for all sorts of traffic and people of Upper Kurram are compelled to use dangerous and long route to reach Peshawar. The security forces have recently launched a massive operation in central Kurram Agency.

RAWALPINDI/LAHORE/KHAR: The army killed at least 18 more Taliban in South Waziristan, Kurram Agency and Bajaur Agency on Monday.

“Taliban fired rockets at a checkpost in Makeen, South Waziristan ... killing four soldiers. Meanwhile, eight Taliban were killed [in fighting],” said the ISPR, adding that security forces cleared Tauda China Khola and established a checkpost near Makeen.

Makeen is one of the most notorious Taliban-held towns in South Waziristan and close to where former TTP chief Baitullah Mehsud had a house, which the military said on Friday had been demolished.

The ISPR said the army also consolidated its positions around the “Jandola-Sararogha axis”.

Troops conducted a search-and-clearance operation in Bangalkhel, Totai Langarkhel and Kanigurm, and demolished Taliban commander Mumtaz Burki’s hideout on the “Shakai-Kaniguram axis”.

In Swat, troops arrested two Taliban from Batkhela Bazaar and Usmanabad near Mingora. Also, a Taliban surrendered to security forces in Charbagh.

In Kurram Agency, a private TV channel reported that at least eight Taliban were killed and several injured when fighter jets bombed Taliban hideouts.

According to the channel, air force jets bombed Chanark, Wormegai and Spairkot, destroying nine Taliban hideouts.

In Bajaur Agency, troops killed at least two Taliban. However, three soldiers were also killed.

A remote-controlled bomb explosion killed two security personnel and injured another in Mulla Sayed area of Salarzai tehsil. Taliban had planted the bomb in a military vehicle.

In the agency headquarters of Khar, Taliban gunned down a third soldier – identified as Noor Zada of the Bajaur Levies. The area was cordoned off following the attack.

Taliban rockets: Meanwhile, Taliban also fired rockets at the Scouts Fort in Mamoond tehsil. Troops retaliated and killed at least two Taliban.

During a search operation in Charmang, security forces seized three anti-aircraft guns from an underground bunker.

WANA: Security forces killed five militants and injured eight during fresh offensive against militants in South Waziristan.

According to sources, operation Rah-e-Nijat is on in Makeen, Ladha and other areas against extremists and five militants were killed and eight others wounded in the action. Gunship helicopters pounded militants’ positions in Janta area and destroyed six hideouts.

Security forces took control of various areas and seized huge arms cache including suicide jackets during operation underway since October 17.

On the other hand, forces targeted militants’ vehicle in Khoway Dadkhel area in central Kurram Agency killing one militant and injuring seven others.

Updated at: 1059 PST, Sunday, November 08, 2009 WANA: At least eight extremists have been killed and 11 others injured in the fresh crackdown of the security forces in various area of South Waziristan Agency, Geo News reported Sunday. The extremists are fleeing from the areas after the security forces entered the stronghold of extremists. The extremists are believed to be arriving in Orakzai Agency, Kurram Agency and North Waziristan. To stem the inflow of extremist in the area, curfew has been clamped in North Waziristan Agency (NWA) area of Razmak. According to sources, the security forces continued the search operation in South Waziristan Agency areas of Makin and Ladha, where eight extremists were killed and 11 others including a commander were injured in the fresh action. The forces are pounding the hideouts of extremists with fighter jets, gunship helicopters and heavy artillery. Meantime, search operation has been started in Kurram Agency area of Lower Kurram, where an extremist was killed and three others were injured; while, several others have been arrested. Pak-Afghan border is still closed today on the third consecutive day.

Senator Abdul Nabi Bangash drew the president’s attention towards the tense situation in the agency, particularly gripping Parachinar and some of its adjoining areas for almost two years. The lawmaker explained how serious the situation had become, as stocks of food and medicines had almost exhausted. “Even life-saving drugs are not available there,” he said. “Senator Bangash raised the issue during the meeting at the President House and expressed concern over the continuous blockade of the main road leading towards the Kurram Agency,” said ANP Senior Vice-President Senator Haji Muhammad Adeel, when The News contacted him. ANP President Senator Asfandyar Wali called for more measures to improve law and order and security situation, particularly in Darra Adamkhel and some other areas, infested with militants. According to sources, security forces killed an extremist and wounded three others in Chapri area of Kurram Agency, while security forces arrested 10 suspects in Lower Kurram. Meanwhile, police arrested three terrorists in a raid on a shop in Taza Gram area of Lower Deer.
