Political authorities said a big majority if those killed by the tribesmen were the troublemakers..

Reports say total casualties in the nine days fighting erupted after attack on Balishkhel check post have crossed fifty with 80 others injured. Those killed reportedly include 35 insurgents.

While both the sides were using heavy weapons like mortar shells and LMGs against each other, independent sources said the majority of the extremists killed during the ongoing fighting hailed from Waziristan, Swat and Aurakzai Agency.

On the other hand the Tribal Lashker comprising armed combatants and which was formed in reaction to a deadly blast at a mosque in Hayagai Sharqi upper Dir District on June 5, claimed to have successfully cleared most of areas of Dir Upper from the extremists.

Pitched battles between the local Taliban and the Lashker which was later joined by thousands of more tribals from the adjoining villages and was supported by the security forces and the PAF war planes had continued for the past three weeks and the tribals inflicting heavy losses on the militants made them on the run. Reports say 34 extremists have been gunned down till date.

The Qaumi Lashker is successfully making advancement in areas where pro-Taliban militants tried to make their foothold by taking the local population hostage at gun point. The miscreants have now been held up by the Lashker in Shotkas, Ghazigay and Dogdarra areas, said Malik Moatabar Khan who heads the Tribal Lashker comprising nine thousands tribals.

The Lashker is duly supported and assisted by the security forces, artillery, gunship helicopters in action against the militants.

The Lashker leaders said heavy fighting was going on between the Lashker and the militants in parts of the mountainous district however due to suspension of communication link, the exact number of casualties could not be ascertained. They sounded optimistic that Dir Upper would be cleared of the miscreants in a week's time.

Swat, Bajaur IDPs want resumption of registration

Thursday, June 25, 2009, Rajab 01, 1430 A.H
Swat, Bajaur IDPs want resumption of registration

PESHAWAR: The internally displaced persons (IDPs) from Swat district and Bajaur Agency staged two separate protest rallies here Wednesday, demanding of the government to restart the registration and provide relief items to them.

The protesters gathered at the Press Club and chanted slogans against the government. The protesters hailing from Swat were led by Arshad and Imtiaz Akbar while those from Bajaur Agency were led by Zakirullah..

Speaking on the occasion, Imtiaz said the IDPs daily came to register themselves in scorching heat but the government had stopped the registration that resulted in hardships to displaced people. They demanded of the government to facilitate the helpless people of Malakand and immediately restart the registration process.

Zakirullah appealed to the government to restart the registration of displaced people of Bajaur Agency. He demanded of the government that they should also be treated in the same manner and provided all facilities like the IDPs from Malakand Division.

The displaced persons from Bajaur also demanded of government to end military operation in Bajaur Agency so that they could return to their homes. On the other hand, the Emergency Response Unit (ERU) on Wednesday informed the internally displaced persons (IDPs) of Malakand Division and tribal areas that registration process had been stopped immediately.

According to an ERU handout issued here, the new registration for IDPs of Kabal and Shamozai areas of Swat district, Charmang of Bajaur Agency and upper Mohmand Agency would begin on June 29 for a few days.

New registration points in Mardan, Peshawar and Charsadda districts will be opened. The registration points will be opened at Government Boys College, Shankar Road, Mardan, Government Degree College, Charsadda and Government School for Disabled, Pajagi Road.

Registration points will also be opened on the same date in Kohat district for the registration of IDPs of upper and lower Kurram Agency only. Union Council Jarma, Bannu Road for the lower Kurram Agency and Union Council Sherkot for upper Kurram Agency will be the registration points.

Meanwhile, the internally displaced persons (IDPs) from Malakand Division held a protest demonstration against a local leader of Pakistan People's Party for what they called receiving bribes while delivering Baitul Mal cheques to them.

Jahangir Khan fixed Rs300 in first stage as his share from IDPs for delivering Baitul Mal cheques to them, which later increased to Rs1,500, said the protesters during a demonstration outside the Press Club here Wednesday.

"We are not beggars, but we left everything in the war zone to move to safer places. Despite this, we are being looted," they said, alleging that those giving bribes were delivered cheques but those refusing to do so were not only deprived of cheques but also abused by the local leader of the party and staff.

They said Rs5,000 per family was allocated by the federal government for the displaced persons from the militancy-hit areas of Malakand Division, and "the money is being delivered to them as beggars."

The protesters, led by Union Council Palosai Nazim Gul Bashar Khalil, urged the government to take notice of the anomalies in the distribution of cheques. The protesters demanded distribution of the Baitul Mal cheques through the army or the union council nazim
