ISLAMABAD: Sajid Hussain Turi, a member of the National Assembly from Kurram Agency, fears another deadly armed clash in the restive region after fighting in two villages of the upper Kurram entered its fourth day with no end to it in sight. The lawmaker told a group of reporters here he had fears that the fighting, which started three days back in Shilawzan and Piwar villages of the upper Kurram, could engulf the entire region if the government and security forces did not rise to the occasion. To a question, Turi pointed out he had already brought the issue in the notice of Prime Minister Gilani, Interior Minister Rehman Malik and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Governor Owais Ahmed Ghani and was awaiting action on this count. He made it clear that due to the crushing defeat of terrorists in Orakzai Agency, they were now on the run and desperate to infiltrate into the neighbouring Kurram Agency. He said the local people of all communities were united and had already announced their all-out support to the government against the terrorists. He called on the government to re-open the Thall-Parachinar Road, which had been closed for the last three-and-a-half years, compounding the locals' problems. He mentioned that since 2007, about 2,500 people had been killed and thousands other wounded in clashes in Kurram Agency. Source: http://www.thenews.com.pk/print1.asp?id=235456 |
